How to Connect ChatGPT to Your Email on Mac

Let ChatGPT read, search, send and reply to email through Mail.app on your Mac. Works with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and any IMAP account — via a free MCP connector. No API keys, and the tools run on your Mac.

LMCP works with every account you've added to Apple Mail (iCloud, Gmail, IMAP, Exchange) and can search or reply within the one you choose.

Yes — ChatGPT can read and send your email on a Mac by installing LMCP and adding it to ChatGPT as a custom MCP app. LMCP is a free, local MCP server that talks to Mail.app through native macOS APIs, so any account configured there (iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, IMAP) works. ChatGPT can then summarise your inbox, search across accounts, draft replies and file messages. Adding it takes ChatGPT on the web; LMCP itself is free and needs no API keys.

Can ChatGPT Read My Email?

With LMCP, yes — ChatGPT can read, search, send and reply to your email directly through Mail.app on your Mac. Ask in plain English: “What did Sarah say about the budget?” or “Reply to the latest email from the landlord and say I’ll pay Friday.” ChatGPT calls the right tool on your Mac and works with your real inbox.

No Gmail API keys and no OAuth into your mail provider: LMCP talks to Mail.app locally, so every account you already have set up there is available. What ChatGPT gets back is the result of the tool it called.

What You Will Need

  • macOS 12+ with Mail.app configured (at least one account)
  • ChatGPT on the web in a desktop browser — MCP apps are added from Plugins, no Developer mode needed; on Business/Enterprise/Edu a workspace admin may need to allow custom apps first
  • LMCP installed (free)

Connect ChatGPT to your Mac

chatgpt.com → Plugins → Add → Create MCP App

Custom MCP apps are added from Plugins in a desktop browser. On Business/Enterprise/Edu a workspace admin may need to allow custom apps first. ChatGPT flags a custom app as high-risk because it can act on your data.

  1. 1

    Install LMCP on your Mac

Download LMCP from local-mcp.com and run the installer — it installs Local MCP to Applications and auto-configures your AI clients in ~30 seconds.

  2. 2

Turn on web access and copy your Connection URL

Click the LMCP icon in your menu bar and find Your web AI · Cloud Relay. Turn web access ON (it is off by default for privacy), then open your assistant’s panel and click Copy URL.
The URL is — it carries no token and is the same for everyone; every step below that says “the URL you copied” means this one. Access is granted by approving the connection on your Mac, not by the URL.

  3. 3

    Open Plugins

Use a desktop browser at chatgpt.com — MCP apps can’t be added from the mobile or desktop apps. Click Plugins in the sidebar (or go to chatgpt.com/plugins). There is no Developer mode to turn on any more; on Business/Enterprise/Edu a workspace admin may need to allow custom apps first.

  4. 4

    Create the MCP App

Click Add ▾ at the top right and choose Create MCP App — not “Create plugin”. In the New Plugin dialog set Name: , leave Connection on Server URL and paste the URL you copied from the LMCP menu bar (). Authentication stays on “OAuth” — leave Advanced OAuth settings empty, we auto-register. Tick I understand and want to continue (Create stays disabled until you do) and click Create.

  5. 5

Sign in and approve on your Mac

Create only registers the connector — it still reads “No app actions available yet”. Click Sign in with LMCP: ChatGPT opens an Authorize page on , and a dialog appears on your Mac. Click Approve there and the tool catalog loads.
If no dialog shows up, or the page says LMCP isn’t running, the approval simply expired — it only lasts 5 minutes. Click the button again; nothing needs reinstalling.

  6. 6

    Enable it in a chat

Start a new conversation and enable LMCP from the composer’s tools menu (+). Then ask: “List my email accounts” or “What meetings do I have today?”
In Settings → Plugins, Default permission decides which tools run without asking: with Allow low-risk tools, tools ChatGPT considers low-risk can run without a prompt, and the rest still ask first.

Steps verified 2026-09-27. Local tools run on your device; selected AI providers and connectors receive requested content. Review each tool’s permissions and approval behavior.

Which Email Providers Work?

Any account configured in Mail.app — if you can see it in Mail.app, ChatGPT can use it:

  • Gmail — personal and Google Workspace
  • Outlook.com / Hotmail and Microsoft Exchange / Office 365
  • iCloud Mail
  • Any IMAP provider — Fastmail, Yahoo, custom domains

iCloud Mail

ChatGPT reads and sends iCloud Mail the same way it works with any other account in Mail.app — there is nothing iCloud-specific to configure. LMCP reads the accounts already set up in Mail.app, and an iCloud account added in System Settings > Internet Accounts (or directly in Mail) is already signed in, so there is no iCloud API key, no OAuth screen, and no app-specific password for ChatGPT to go through. ChatGPT sees iCloud Mail alongside Gmail, Outlook or any IMAP account you have configured, and can search, summarize, draft and send from it. Try: “Check my iCloud Mail for anything from Apple Support this week and summarize it.”

Privacy: Local Tools and Cloud Data Paths

  • LMCP runs locally and talks to Mail.app through native macOS APIs.
  • With Cloud Data Forwarding on, requests route through an encrypted relay to your Mac and execute there — no intermediate mail servers, no API keys.
  • The assistant still receives what it asked for and handles it under its own terms. Local execution on its own does not establish GDPR or CCPA compliance — assess the data you authorize, the provider you picked and your own requirements.

Troubleshooting

ChatGPT does not show any emails

Confirm Mail.app has the account configured, and that LMCP has Automation access to Mail in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation. Also make sure Cloud Data Forwarding is ON.

The connector shows “No app actions available yet”

Normal — that panel doesn’t list tools. Enable LMCP in a chat via + → More → LMCP and it works.
